year: 1994
genre: alternative rock, experimental, industrial metal
notes: not my favorite nine inch nails album, but a very close second. this one is heavy and miserably bleak. i was in love with this album in my senior year of high school; i was even writing a novelization of its concept at one point. my two favorites are a warm place and ruiner.

artist: nine inch nails
album name: year zero
year: 2007
genre: electronic, alternative rock
notes: this is my favorite nine inch nails album. i said before i was a sucker for a concept album, and this one has a phenomenal concept. i won't go into it here because i'm probably going to end up making a shrine for it, but it even had its own arg. i love the sound of this one, i love the lyrics, i love everything about it. i was really, really into politics when this album came out, and it felt good to hear what i felt reflected in music i loved. my favorite changes, but right now it's capital g.

year: 1987
genre: industrial, ebm
notes: this one is so fucking good. it's loud, it's harsh, it's not mixed particularly well. join in the chant was played at just about every goth night i went to. love it. my favorite song right now is let beauty loose.

artist: revolting cocks
album name: beers, steers & queers (remixes)
year: 1991
genre: industrial, alternative rock
notes: exactly what it says on the label: two remixes of beers, steers & queers and two bonus tracks. i loved hearing stainless steel providers live, and their cover of pil's public image is wild. both the remixes are good, but i prefer the drop your britches mix.

artist: roughhausen
album name: someone's got to pay
year: 2009
genre: industrial, hardcore
notes: i saw roughhausen in 2012 and it was a really good, really fun show. weirdly enough, i later learned that the frontman and i are distantly related! i picked up two of their cds that night, and this is one of them. regrettably, i really don't think i've listened to them since.

artist: skinny puppy
album name: mythmaker
year: 2007
genre: industrial, idm, experimental
notes: skinny puppy is also a favorite. we saw them live in 2023 and it was an amazing experience. i feel so grateful to have been able to see them for their final tour. this one is a big departure from what most people think of when they think of skinny puppy, but it's one i love nonetheless. my favorite track is ugli.

notes: i first heard sorry when k.flay recommended them in late 2019, and was so excited for the full album to drop. and it didn't disappoint at all! my favorite track is starstruck; it holds a special place in my heart because it's the first song of theirs i heard.

artist: vnv nation
album name: of faith, power and glory
year: 2009
genre: ebm, synthpop, futurepop
notes: from the title alone, you'd think this would be some weird christian nationalist shit, but it couldn't be further from it. ronan harris is such a cool dude and i've loved vnv nation for almost 20 years now. he literally got off stage to check on me because one of his songs hit a little too close to home and i was crying. empires is my favorite vnv album, but i really love this one as well, and my favorite song from it is tomorrow never comes.

artist: voltaire
album name: almost human
year: 2000
genre: goth rock
notes: this one is so indefensibly cringe, lmao. in my defense, i was 14 and at a convention when i bought it and he was so nice. i actually attended his panel that night (which went on way longer than it was supposed to and kind of turned into a party) and had so much fun, it was ridiculous. every once in a while, i think about voltaire and wonder what he's up to these days, but i'm honestly afraid to look him up because what if he's a terf now? what if he just sucks? idk. anyway, my favorite song from this album is either dunce or almost human.

artist: yuki kajiura
album name: music inspired by boogiepop and others
year: 2000
genre: a lot
notes: this is a beautiful collection of music inspired by my favorite light novel series, and also one of the cds i've had the longest. it's among the first i ever bought! i was so excited to find it because at the time, it was impossible to find anything to do with boogiepop in the us. it's all over the place sound-wise but it's all fantastic. my favorite is porcelain!
